Northbrook swears in new firefighter and promotes two department members

The Village of Northbrook swore in a new firefighter and confirmed two promotions during its June 10 meeting.
Fire Chief Weiss introduced the three honorees: Lieutenant Brad Putney, promoted to captain; firefighter-paramedic Ted Peters, promoted to lieutenant; and Jacob Fioka, sworn in as the village’s newest firefighter after graduating from the NIPSTA Fire Academy on June 6.
Chief Weiss summarized each member’s experience. Putney joined the Northbrook Fire Department in April 2012, has served as department technical rescue team leader since 2023, worked in the Division of Training and Safety, and earned a bachelor of science in business marketing and an associate degree in fire science operations. Weiss said Putney will attend Fire Ground Command Officer School at the Illinois Fire Service Institute and noted that he was the department’s 2024 Firefighter of the Year.
Weiss said Peters began with the department in January 2009, will manage the department’s self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) program as a lieutenant and brings a background in residential and commercial construction and construction management. Fioka, the new hire, earned a bachelor of arts in biology from Lake Forest College, graduated from NIPSTA on June 6 and will attend paramedic school in August 2025.
The village clerk administered the oath to all three. Afterward, one of the honorees offered brief thanks to the board and families in attendance. The board recessed the promotional ceremony into the regular meeting without any formal vote to approve the personnel actions; the swearing and badge pinning were ceremonial and part of the meeting’s agenda.
