A Thousand Oaks resident urged the council not to sell the Hillcrest Center to private developers, calling the facility “an oasis” that hosts classes, art exhibits and services for people with special needs. Karen Martin, who said she has lived in the community for 32 years and ran a business near City Hall, urged the council to “find another way to fund your vision of downtown.”
City Manager Drew Powers responded in the meeting’s staff report segment, telling the council that staff is engaged in “productive discussions” with the Conejo Recreation and Park District (CRPD) about a potential transfer of the facility. Powers said a sale is not on the horizon.
Martin’s remarks came during the public-comment portion of the meeting; council members did not take formal action in response but the city manager’s report indicated a transfer discussion is underway.
