County executive details directives, 3‑1‑1 adoption and proposes July legislative committee meeting

County Executive Shorter briefed the Board of Supervisors on June 10 about three directives from the prior meeting, recent communications awards and early results from the county’s new 3‑1‑1 service, and proposed scheduling a July 15 meeting of the board's new legislative committee.

Shorter said staff were directed in the previous meeting to explore revisions to dog licensing, to review Dominion Energy's proposed map for the Morrisville Wishing Star project (with potential county participation as a responding party), and to explore options for two community gardens on county property. "A few updates I wanted to go over this afternoon. As usual, there were 3 directives issued during our last meeting," Shorter said.

Shorter also announced that the county's Communications and Engagement Office won two Telly awards for video work and reported that the 3‑1‑1 service launched a few weeks earlier had received more than 2,600 service requests across all magisterial districts.

Committee scheduling debate

Shorter suggested that the new legislative committee meet on July 15, the same day as a scheduled finance and budget committee meeting, with a proposed midday start. Supervisors debated whether to keep the board’s regular work session that day or to schedule both committee meetings, expressing concern about day length, staff capacity and the necessity of the work session if no agenda items yet existed. After discussion, the board directed staff to bring a calendar amendment for a vote at the June 24 meeting to schedule both committee meetings on July 15 and cancel the work session that day.
