Newport News City Council approved an amended package of contingency grants totaling $65,000 at a June 10 work session at the Denbigh Community Center.
The council voted, 4-0, to allocate $40,000 to Achievable Dreams, $10,000 to the Hampton Newport News Achievement Foundation, $10,000 to the Tri Cities Hurricane Youth Foundation and $5,000 to the Apprentice School Foundation. Council members amended the original package to remove a $ (not specified) request for the Boys and Girls Club after a council member said they would have to abstain on that item.
The amendment came after council discussion about whether to proceed while some members were absent or expected to arrive late. The city attorney recommended postponing the Boys and Girls Club item until more members were present; the council instead amended the motion to exclude that request and proceeded to vote on the remaining four grants. The amended motion passed on a roll call showing four affirmative votes and no recorded no votes or abstentions for the amended package.
Council members also noted they were awaiting signatures for the Peninsula Alpha Father’s Day breakfast and the Southeast Community Day Parade. Council leadership recommended referring a staff review of the city’s festivals and parades to the Parks and Neighborhoods committee so the two committee members not present could provide formal recommendations. Council members additionally said the council will continue discussions about a short-term rental policy and matters involving the Peninsula Airport Commission in upcoming individual meetings and at the council retreat.
The motion as approved did not list a mover or seconder in the public transcript. The record indicates the Boys and Girls Club request was excluded from the vote because a council member announced they would abstain if it were considered in the current meeting. The council did not finalize that excluded request at this session.
