The Waukesha City Ordinance and Licensing Committee on June 9 approved a large batch of new and renewal licenses for alcohol, tobacco, vaping and amusements and granted a handful of contingent approvals.
The votes came as a series of motions by Alderperson Helvinsleben, seconded by Alderperson Mannion, and were carried largely by voice vote with unanimous support for the items presented at the meeting.
Committee members said the businesses were invited to the meeting because each had failed one compliance check in the previous year. A committee member cautioned the business representatives in the room: “Please do not fail another or else you'll be here again next year and it might be a different discussion.”
The motions approved multiple Class A (retail) and Class B (beer and liquor combo) licenses for local retailers and restaurants, cigarette/tobacco/vape retailer licenses, amusement permits for indoor skating and pool tables, and several extensions of premises and temporary amendments. The committee also approved renewal lists that included dozens of establishments from national chains to local bars and restaurants.
The committee approved one extension of premises for BB’s on Main for June 28, 2025, and approved a new Class A beer and liquor retail license for Bottle Stop contingent on obtaining a certificate of occupancy. Several other new licenses—1220 The Strand (Class B), El Sol de Mexico (Class B), Discount Smokes and Spirits (Class A), Lincoln Pub (Class B), Walgreens #5636 (Class A), The Coupe (Class B) and Tuscan Banquet Hall (Class B)—were approved contingent upon certificates of occupancy.
The committee also approved a full-service retail permit for Steelhead Ale Works LLC (doing business as Steel Tag Brewing Company) for a fireworks-related event; that motion passed unanimously.
Minutes for the May 12 and May 20, 2025 meetings were approved by unanimous consent at the start of the meeting.
The committee did not detail enforcement steps or penalties as part of these license approvals beyond the stated contingencies. Approved licenses and renewals will be processed administratively per city procedures.
