Two rezoning items were presented at the May 2025 North Charleston City Council meeting and were referred to the Public Safety Committee for further review.
The first item would rezone 5523 and 5525 Attaway Street (Charleston County TMS 47314 Parcels 81 and 80) from R‑1 single‑family to R‑2 multifamily in Council District 8. City planning staff said the properties are vacant, lie near the intersection of Attaway and Sumner, and are adjacent to limited business (B‑1) and some R‑2 uses. Staff noted the comprehensive plan’s future land use map designates the parcels as ‘‘traditional neighborhood development,’’ which supports mixed residential types. Planning staff reported the Planning Commission recommended approval.
A second rezoning presentation covered property addressed as 2132 Dorchester Road (Charleston County TMS 46906 Parcel 609) and an unaddressed parcel (TMS 46906 Parcel 602). Staff described the parcels as currently zoned B‑1 limited business and R‑1 single‑family and recommended rezoning both to R‑2 multifamily, noting proximity to a future rapid transit corridor and mixed‑use designations on the city’s comprehensive plan. Planning Commission also recommended approval of that request.
Council made no final zoning decisions at the meeting; both first‑reading items were referred without objection to the Public Safety Committee for further review and public hearing follow‑up.
