Council proclaims July as Parks and Recreation Month, highlights July events

The Scotts Valley City Council opened its meeting with a proclamation recognizing July as "Parks Make Life Better" month and thanking volunteers and Parks & Recreation staff for their work.
Mayor Tim presented the proclamation and invited a Parks & Recreation delegation to the podium. Jennifer Dunbar, Recreation Coordinator, and other staff and commissioners described planned July events: a July 4 parade with a pre-parade kids zone (partnering with the Boys & Girls Club), a post-parade party with a stage provided by the Kiwanis Club, live music, a beer garden and food trucks, and bounce houses and misting stations for cooling. Dunbar said the kid zone will be open before the parade so families can secure good viewing spots without having to wait on the parade route.
Staff also announced a countywide Family Fun Day on July 19 beginning at 10 a.m., billed as a free agency-wide collaboration that will include touch-a-truck/explore-a-vehicle displays (Metro bus, fire truck, public-works vehicles), community booths, bounce houses and activities on the basketball courts. Parks & Recreation staff said the Sky Park big-kid playground replacement is funded through a prior federal earmark and that the Parks & Recreation Commission formed a subcommittee to review vendor proposals; Ross Recreation was selected to proceed to design.
Volunteers and senior-program leaders were thanked during the public comment period. Cynthia Zenzel, a caller, asked the council to recognize volunteers who run senior bocce and adult recreational leagues and specifically named Susan Taylor and George Melder for their service.
Staff noted that the Parks & Recreation Commission will hold a meeting on June 17 to discuss dogs in parks and fiscal-sustainability/cost-recovery goals for recreation programs, and that staff will meet with youth-sports partners (softball and Little League) to continue those conversations.
