Residents ask Oro Valley to fund dog park turf care; university turf report cited

Several Oro Valley residents used call to audience on June 4 to urge council to allocate funds to restore and maintain grass at the town dog parks. Mark Platt, a resident for 31 years, said the grass in the large dog park — planted November 2023 — has consistently degraded and that the small dog park has developed potholes and safety hazards. Platt told council he engaged the University of Arizona turf-care program, received a report with recommendations for rehabilitation and maintenance, and estimated a worst-case replacement cost of about $37,500 to replace turf in both parks.
Another resident, Aldi Rosenberg, said walking in the small-dog area is physically difficult after an ankle replacement and volunteered to help with fundraising.
Council asked staff to accept the University of Arizona report from Platt and circulate it to council. Town Manager Wilkins was directed to follow up with Platt to receive the report and connect with Parks & Recreation staff to evaluate maintenance needs. No funding decision was made during the meeting; council indicated the item should be shared with staff for consideration in the budget process.
