Cape Coral City Council on June 4 approved upgrading a planned police marine enforcement vessel from a 23-foot Silver Ships AM 700 to a 27-foot AM 800, increasing the not-to-exceed purchase authorization up to $325,000. The council amendment to Resolution 178-25 passed 8-0.
Council member Kilraign led conversation and proposed the amendment after confirming with the police marine supervisor and Police Chief Anthony Sizemore that the department preferred the larger vessel for operational performance and safety in inclement weather. Staff said the AM 800 will be specced with twin 300-horsepower engines versus the twin 225s on the AM 700. The quotes in the packet showed a roughly $23,000 difference between the two vendor quotes for the two models; council supported spending the additional amount given the operational benefits.
Chief Sizemore said funding comes primarily from a long-standing marine grant and from permitted forfeiture funds; no general fund dollars will be used. He noted the department balances capital needs across many items and that forfeiture accounts are a renewable funding source tied to enforcement activity. A motion to amend the purchase to the AM 800 and raise the not-to-exceed authorization to $325,000 carried unanimously.
