Beaver County to begin EPA-funded cleanup of Darlington Brickyards site

Beaver County officials said they have selected a contractor and will begin remediation work at the Darlington Brickyards site off Cantleton Road under an Environmental Protection Agency grant.
County commissioners discussed the project during their June 4 work session. A county official said, “An EPA grant that we got a while ago to clean up the Darlington Brickyards off Cantleton Road. Finally have the people in place. We've passed a resolution and awarded that to a company called Oval.”
The county described the site as several hundred acres and said the contamination consists mainly of asbestos and two other substances identified in earlier phase 1 and phase 2 assessments. “We're gonna start the actual work to clean up that brickyard,” the official said.
County staff said the land will be restored for public use through the redevelopment authority and a land trust. Officials said reuse plans prepared by a consultant exist and that the property is near local landmarks including Watts Mill Bridge and the North Country Trail. One commissioner said the county hopes to restore roughly 300 acres by late summer or fall, though a firm schedule was not provided.
Officials said the cleanup work had been delayed by administrative changes at the EPA but that the county has been able to draw down funds and proceed. The county noted historical and natural features on the site, including Native American artifacts and waterways such as North Fork of Little Beaver Creek.
Commissioners did not record a formal vote during the work session; they referred to an earlier resolution awarding the contract and discussed next steps for the cleanup work.
