Council votes to close segment of Seventh Street for Seventh Street Plaza

The Waco City Council on June 3 approved an ordinance to close the Seventh Street right-of-way between Austin Avenue and the alley between Austin and Franklin avenues to create the Seventh Street Plaza. The Planning Commission recommended approval 8–0 on May 27, finding the right-of-way was not required for traffic flow or emergency access.
Assistant Director Wagstaff said the section has been closed informally for some time and the ordinance would finalize that status. Council members noted recent community activities and expressed support for the plaza; one council member referenced a community paint day and upcoming events at the site.
No speakers appeared in objection. The council approved the closure by roll-call vote with Fairfield, Lozano, Porter Root, Ewing, Chase and Holmes voting yes. The ordinance retains city ownership of the right-of-way while officially closing it to through traffic.
