Harnett County elections staff outline precinct changes, budget status and municipal filing dates as board completes term

The Harnett County Board of Elections held a special meeting where elections staff described upcoming precinct changes, gave a status update on the office budget, and announced municipal filing dates as the current board completed its two‑year term.
Pam, elections director, said pre‑geocode updates will split the Anderson Creek and Barbecue precincts and that the office will send updated voter cards to all affected voters once the changes are complete. She said most affected voters will not see any change until the primary, but some voters in the Lillington municipal area will be affected in the coming election. The office also plans to advertise the precinct changes on its website, newsletter and other social media and news outlets to reach impacted residents.
The director told the board that county commissioners continue to review the elections department budget. She said the commissioners’ next work session is scheduled for June 10 and that a vote was planned for June 16. The budget submitted to commissioners included an expansion request that would increase the number of election workers; that expansion request was approved. An additional expansion request for a new outreach position was not funded at this time, though the director said commissioners could revisit the matter later in the fiscal year.
The board received several operational updates: staff reported they have moved into a new office building, have established security protocols, and plan to update the exterior sign so it reads “Board of Elections” rather than the current “Facilities.” The office is also obtaining quotes to replace the sign.
Staff announced municipal candidate filing for the towns of Erwin, Angier, Coats and Lillington will open July 7 and close July 18; the town of Dunn will not hold an election this year. The director said staff will continue outreach to ensure voters understand changes ahead of the primary.
A member of the public, speaking on behalf of the Northwest Precinct, thanked the board for its service. "On behalf of myself and the Northwest Precinct, I want to thank the entire board for their last 2 years of service," the speaker said.
The board approved minutes from a prior meeting by voice vote after a motion and second; the meeting record does not show individual vote tallies. Staff presented plaques and small gift bags to outgoing board members; several board members offered brief remarks of appreciation before the meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
No ordinances, resolutions or new contracts were voted on at the meeting; the budget decisions described above remain with the Board of County Commissioners for final action.
