Nettie Rose Cooley, the newly appointed CEO of Block Island Medical Center, told the New Shoreham Town Council on June 2 that the center has staff in place to handle expected summer urgent-care demand while the organization continues to recruit a chief medical officer.
Cooley said she is in about her ninth week on the job and is reviewing the center's budget and community needs. She told councilors a search firm remains engaged to find a CMO; a recent candidate who had appeared likely to accept an offer ultimately chose a different opportunity. Cooley said she was "very comfortable" the clinic could manage urgent-care volume for the summer because the center currently has two advanced practitioners, robust nursing staff, a resident and medical-student program, and medical assistants handling front-desk and phone volume.
Cooley said two additional advanced practitioners had expressed interest in working summer hours; she was awaiting a resume from one candidate and planned interviews to assess fit. She also described staffing adjustments designed to improve patient access, including a returning full-time medical assistant and a student completing certification hours.
Councilors asked about interim plans for housing clinicians; Cooley said one expressed interest in summer housing and staff were addressing housing needs separately. No formal council action was taken; Cooley's remarks were presented as an update.
