The Scranton School District’s board handled several facilities items at the June 2 meeting, including a tabled gym floor project, an awarded locker contract and a large change order for window replacements.
Gym floor: Administration presented a low bid of $34,720 to sand and refinish the Scranton High School gym floor; the work would return the court to its current appearance. Board members and community directors debated whether to add an enhanced graphics package depicting the Scranton “Knights” or to keep the floor neutral to better welcome West Scranton High teams that also use the gym. Concerns included community equity and whether additional enhanced graphics would cost an estimated $8,000–$12,000. After debate the board voted to table the gym floor contract so administration can provide final pricing and community input; the motion to table passed unanimously on roll call.
Lockers: The board first rejected the initial bid for West Grama High School locker replacements citing lack of competition. The board later approved awarding the West Grama lockers contract to Third Dimension Specialties through the CoStar contract; the award amount listed in the packet was $86,285.40. Board members clarified these replacements are for athletic lockers that were deemed not repairable.
Windows and curtain wall change orders: The board approved a change order (item E5) covering window and curtain‑wall replacement scope at West High (projects identified in packet as PR51 and PR52, RFCO 49 and 50, ASI‑29), with a total cost of $756,914.46 (window replacements $616,576.08; curtain wall replacement $140,726.38). That item drew extended discussion about project scope, earlier contract versions and the difficulty of catching rot or component failures during earlier design iterations. Administration said multiple project scopes had evolved since 2022 and that some items had not been in earlier designs; directors urged closer vetting of capital scopes going forward. The motion carried on roll call.
Votes and next steps: The board tabled the Scranton High gym floor (unanimous roll call), approved the locker award and approved the West High window change orders. Administration said it will solicit final graphic pricing for the gym floor and consider options to accommodate West Scranton community concerns and return with a revised motion or seek consensus before work begins.
