Councilor Jennifer Savage, who sponsored the resolution, told the council she brought the measure after receiving a wave of emails from parents, students and teachers following the May 13 signing of House Bill 819 into state law. "If we pass this resolution tonight, school kids may be able to go home for the summer under the banner of a rainbow flag," Savage said during her remarks.
The resolution came in response to HB 819, which the council and many public commenters said effectively restricted display of certain flags in public buildings and classrooms. Supporters argued recognizing the Pride flag would protect visibility for LGBTQIA+ and Two-Spirit residents, particularly youth; opponents said making the Pride flag an "official" municipal emblem crosses a line of neutrality for government.
