The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors proclaimed June 2025 as Gun Violence Awareness Month and heard remarks from public health and violence-prevention partners about prevention strategies and local programs.
Angelica Diaz, director of the Healthy Communities branch of the Public Health Department, accepted the proclamation on behalf of county violence-prevention staff and cited a multi-pronged public health approach that includes safe storage education, relationship supports, and community-based interventions. The board and partners named county programs such as gun buyback events the county has hosted, and cited partnerships with East San Jose Peace Partnership, South County Heals, San José youth programs and local health and probation partners.
Speakers also noted a homicide of a person identified as Jonathan Joss; the board referenced information from the victim’s husband that the attack involved homophobic slurs and a shooting. Jacqueline Franco of East San Jose Peace Partnership asked the county to continue framing gun violence as a public-health issue and said prevention requires education, mental health supports and community-led strategies. The board encouraged residents to review the Public Health Department’s “We All Play a Role” campaign and to participate in prevention events and safe-storage efforts.
