The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors proclaimed June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and heard statistics and program descriptions from county adult protective services staff.
The board noted national and local statistics presented at the dais: a speaker cited an estimate that 5,000,000 older adults in the United States are victims of abuse and neglect; financial abuse was described as accounting for roughly $2.6 billion in annual losses nationally. Locally, Adult Protective Services (APS) reported receiving nearly 10,000 reports in 2024 and confirming over 5,000 cases, with financial exploitation, neglect and emotional harm the most frequent types of confirmed abuse.
APS staff highlighted HomeSafe, a program that helps at-risk older adults avoid homelessness by connecting them to housing and services, and announced a free San Jose “Scam Jam” in partnership with AARP on June 18 at 353 West Julian Street to help residents recognize and prevent fraud. The board urged residents to use county resources to help protect older adults.
