Sheriff's office seeks renewal of USDA wildlife services contract; county to continue partial funding

The Cochise County sheriff's office presented an annual renewal of an interagency agreement that supports the USDA wildlife services officer who handles wildlife calls countywide.
Commander Kenny Bradshaw said the county has had an arrangement for nearly 20 years and that the current renewal proposes "just under $2,000 increase in the contract this year for his salary." Bradshaw described the officer's duties as responding to destructive or sick wildlife, such as coyotes attacking backyard chickens.
Supervisors asked whether feral or free-roaming cats in Douglas should be handled by the wildlife officer; Bradshaw said animal control handles domestic and feral cat complaints while the wildlife services officer focuses on wildlife. Bradshaw said the county supplements the officer's funding by paying for part of the vehicle and fuel and noted that the officer is employed through a state-administered program that receives federal funds.
