The Rockville Environment Commission presented Ingleside at King Farm with an Environmental Excellence Award on June 2 for a resident food‑scrap composting program that staff said now collects roughly 300 pounds of compostables each week.
The award was announced by Will MacLean, chair of the Environment Commission, who told the council that the dining department at Ingleside first joined Montgomery County’s composting pilot for dining facilities and then expanded outreach to residents. "The resident food scraps composting began in July 2024," MacLean said, noting the pilot started with 25 participants and grew to 50 before expanding community‑wide.
MacLean said the program now operates twice weekly, with residents invited "every Monday afternoon and Thursday morning for an hour" to drop off food scraps and other compostables near the facility’s cafe kitchen. He said a volunteer resident monitor checks for contaminants before the material is placed in collection bins and the combined dining and resident collections are turned into soil.
The expansion was credited to the facility’s Green Team and to the general manager of dining services, Teddy De Missy, who "decided to expand the program's outreach" after the dining pilot was running, according to MacLean. Dave Martinson, co‑chair of the Ingleside at King Farm Green Team, accepted the award.
Council member Barry Jackson was identified in the meeting as the nomination source for Ingleside at King Farm.
The commission encouraged residents to consult the city’s website for nomination rules and to consider nominating individuals or organizations for future awards.
