Library staff presented the department’s “Shaping Our Library Tomorrow” action plan, a nine-month initiative intended to align internal operations, staff engagement and community services with city strategic priorities.
The staff representative said the process began in July 2024 and included division-level staff engagement sessions, stakeholder analysis and a SWOT exercise that resulted in a prioritized list of initiatives. Staff described four key initiative areas: (1) employee engagement and development (including cross-divisional committees and professional development), (2) an hourly opportunity program to identify career pathways and training for hourly employees, (3) safety and security (updated in-charge binders, police department training sessions, facility improvements such as lighting), and (4) program and service excellence (improving technology infrastructure, pursuing an automated materials handling system request in next year’s budget, and improving Wi‑Fi/printing services).
The presenter said department values were revised to align with city values and that the action plan’s initiatives will be incorporated in fiscal year 2025–26 department goals. Staff cited recent steps already taken: an external consultant review of internal workflows related to acquisitions and cataloging, an updated in-charge binder with training, and staff attendance at professional conferences that fed program ideas back into local services.
Ending: Staff invited trustees to request clarifications or follow-up meetings; staff said many initiatives will be phased into the coming fiscal year and will return in departmental goal reports.
