Palo Alto parks staff list completed projects and timelines for several restroom and park improvements

Parks division staff summarized recent events and capital projects during the Parks & Recreation Commission meeting on Tuesday, noting completed work and upcoming community engagement for several park facilities.
Division manager Sarah Robustelli reviewed spring and early summer events (Earth Day on April 27, the May Fete parade and fair on May 3, the upcoming Twilight Concerts starting June 21, family movie nights at Mitchell Park and the July 4 summer festival and chili cook‑off). Robustelli also noted a Fred Eberly Towerwell Park opening event tied to a Fire Station 1 open house and thanked the Palo Alto History Association and community partners.
Project updates included: Mitchell Park restrooms (a design phase and future community meetings; Friends of Palo Alto Parks funded portable restrooms near Pickleball while permanent facilities are planned in the CIP), Greer Park basketball‑court resurfacing and hoop replacement (demo underway, reopening anticipated in June), Bolware playground fully open, and Coverly Field restrooms completed with four units, a new sewer pump station and repaving of the trail to Nelson Drive; staff said Coverly restrooms are planned to open on Monday, June 2.
Commissioners asked for timelines and sequencing. Staff said Mitchell Park permanent restroom procurement and fabrication had not been ordered and estimated realistic delivery about a year out after community outreach and design; schedule and fabrication are contingent on community outreach and adoption of the FY26 CIP budget. On parity with designs for Mitchell Park and Partee/Eleanor Park restrooms, staff said projects would proceed one‑by‑one and the Metro Pickleball site was next in line before Partee/Eleanor. The Friends of Palo Alto Parks’ portable restrooms are maintained by a vendor paid for by the Friends group, per staff.
Commissioners asked about high‑tide/sea‑level impacts (staff said rangers saw no overtopping), tree protection and potential loss when siting restrooms, and whether the Foothills fire plan would come to PRC (staff said the plan was reviewed internally and not slated for PRC but would follow up with appropriate staff). Staff reminded commissioners about Mitchell Park community outreach scheduled for June 12 (second community meeting, 6–8 p.m.) and noted the Cubberley community poll results would be presented to city council on June 9.
No formal action was taken; staff said they will return with community outreach dates and timelines as CIP design work advances and after FY26 budget adoption.
