Calaveras sheriff reports increased marine patrols, citations over Memorial Day weekend

Sheriff Rochelle Whiting told the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors on May 27 that deputies increased patrols over the Memorial Day weekend to address heightened recreation and visitor activity on county waterways.
Whiting reported that land deputies made 26 boat inspections, 13 educational contacts and issued 18 citations. Marine safety units conducted 23 boat inspections/stops, 51 educational contacts, conducted six tows or boater assists, issued four citations, and assisted with one stranded boater and one possible search-and-rescue assist.
Whiting said the county augments its marine safety presence during busy holiday weekends by using overtime funds and contract deputies at Maloney’s, Hogan and Comanche lakes. She reminded the public that vessel operators need a California boater card, that life jackets and throwable flotation aids are essential, and cautioned against boating under the influence.
The sheriff credited deputies’ increased presence for a safe kickoff to the warmer season and encouraged residents to follow boating-safety practices.
