During the public-comment portion of the May 27 council meeting a resident raised a complaint about the city's garbage-can replacement policy. The resident said a city crew split the side of her garbage can and that utility staff told her she must pay roughly $100 to replace it. She said she was willing to buy a replacement but wanted to keep the damaged can for use as a compost container.
City staff responded from the dais that the city treats issued cans as part of a leasing arrangement rather than as private property. Staff asked the resident to leave contact information with the city administrator so staff could investigate and follow up.
Council members did not take formal action; staff said they would contact the resident after the meeting to clarify policy and next steps.
