Jackson City Council on May 20 approved an interagency agreement to provide building inspection and plan review services to neighboring Leoni Township after the township’s long‑time building inspector retired.
The agreement authorizes city inspectors to perform inspections and plan review work for Leoni Township and allows the city manager and city attorney to make minor edits to the contract language. Shane LaPorte, the city’s community development director, told the council the arrangement responds to an immediate need in Leoni Township and that the township board has reviewed and approved the agreement. He said some inspections have already been performed on an individual basis and that the interlocal contract formalizes that arrangement.
Council members asked whether the additional inspections would require new hires or create a service‑burden on the city; staff replied no new positions are required and that city inspectors have capacity. The council approved the interagency agreement by a 6‑1 vote.
City staff said the arrangement would generate revenue for the city while ensuring the township has timely inspection services; they also said normal city liability and insurance coverages remain in place under the interlocal agreement.
