Miller said major tech companies are purchasing large parcels in Nevada and constructing data centers that consume "more electricity than small cities" and "nearly as much water," while creating relatively few local jobs. "They employ maybe a dozen people yet demand onerous tax abatements for offering Nevada next to nothing in return," Miller said.
He cited reporting by MIT Technology Review and said proposed and approved data centers could increase Northern Nevada's power-grid load by 40% and use "literally billions of gallons of water every year," noting multiple proposals in the region. Miller called for unified local action and regional planning to manage energy and water impacts while protecting community resources.
