Bossier Parish Schools on May 22 recognized two staff who recently earned doctorates, presented teacher grants funded by the Optimist Club of Bossier City, and announced district Teachers of the Year.
Public relations liaison Sonia Bail told the board that Dr. Stormy Feibel (assistant principal at Airline High School) and Dr. Jordan Smart (literacy innovation coordinator) recently completed doctoral degrees and were given awards of excellence from the district and Bossier Federal Credit Union.
The Optimist Club's Al Yantis teacher grant program awarded $15,173 this year for classroom projects. Jonathan Keith, president of the Optimist Club, described the club's history of local support for educators and noted the program has contributed more than $600,000 to classrooms over three decades. Christie Becker, district coordinator for special programs, said the committee received 42 anonymous applications and selected winners from elementary, middle and high schools.
Winners named in the meeting included Christie Scott (Elm Grove Elementary), Emily Wilson (Plain Dealing), Lori Robbins (two grants: Waller Elementary and Meadowview), Ray Smith (Cope Middle School), Rhea Bumpus (Benton/Russian), and James Johnston (Bossier High School). The meeting also recognized first-year teachers and Teachers of the Year, including Jennifer Allen (Bend Elementary), Kirsten Hackleman (Curtis Elementary), Crystal Wood (Hot Middle), Michael Shelton (Russian Middle), Rachel Bridal (Benton High) and Emmett Antoine (Houghton High).
Sonia Bail summarized the awards program and said the honorees "showcase what excellence means in our schools." The district presented trophies, certificates and grant checks during the recognition portion of the meeting.
The grants and recognitions were presented during the "good news" item; the board did not record separate policy votes tied to the awards in the transcript.
