Staff said Thornton currently recognizes city program volunteers (parks, police explorers, fire and recreation volunteers) with annual events and ad hoc ongoing appreciation items. Research showed other municipalities host annual community-wide volunteer awards or recognition events (Volunteer of the Year, Youth Volunteer, Neighborhood Leadership awards), typically with a mayoral certificate and public acknowledgement.
