The South Padre Island Convention & Visitors Bureau Advisory Board approved $12,000 in general marketing funds for the South Padre Island Half Marathon and an additional $2,000 specifically allocated for outreach to the Mexican market, for a combined $14,000 in marketing support.
Organizer Rob described rapid growth since the race began six years ago (from roughly 250 runners at inception to a projection of 2,000 for the upcoming event) and highlighted technical upgrades including timing-system text notifications at the finish line and expanded international outreach. He said last year’s field included runners from 18 states and many Texas cities.
Staff and board members discussed prior funding levels (the event received $11,000 last year) and recommended increasing support to help grow room nights, which the organizer reported at roughly 1,100 in a prior year. One board member proposed $3,000 extra (bringing the total to $14,000 with $2,000 earmarked for Mexico); the mover later amended to $12,000 general marketing and $2,000 for the Mexican market. The amended motion passed.
Board members asked that marketing dollars focus on measurable outcomes and that the organizer provide analytics and room-night reporting after the event. The board also discussed sponsorship opportunities to offset future funding needs.
Ending: The half-marathon organizer received the funding allocation and the board asked for post-event reporting on lodging impact and marketing analytics.
