San Luis Obispo City staff explained in a short city-produced video how two-way protected bike lanes operate and offered safety guidance for riders and drivers.
The video said two-way protected bike lanes allow bicycles to travel in both directions in an adjacent, physically separated space and are sometimes used where conventional one-way lanes do not fit. "San Luis Obispo is committed to creating safe and sustainable streets for everyone to use," a City staff member said.
Two-way protected bike lanes place both directions of bicycle traffic next to each other and separate cyclists from vehicle lanes and sidewalks with physical barriers such as curbs, planters, parked cars or flexible posts, the video said. Riders should enter at designated points, usually near intersections, keep to the right within the two-way lane, and follow ground arrows and intersection signs and signals.
The city emphasized yielding to pedestrians who may need to cross the bike lane to reach parking and watching speed to avoid striking lane barriers or other objects, a point it flagged as especially important for e-bike riders. The video also cautioned riders to watch for vehicles emerging from driveways that "may not always look in the direction you are coming from."
The video offered tips for drivers as well: be alert for bicycles when turning into or out of driveways and when approaching intersections with a protected bike lane, and treat those intersections as you would other traffic-controlled intersections.
The presentation did not include information about planned locations, installation timelines, or funding sources for two-way protected bike lanes in San Luis Obispo City.
