The South Padre Island Convention & Visitors Bureau Advisory Board approved $6,500 for marketing support for the SPI Triathlon, which is scheduled for Sept. 28, 2025. Organizers requested $10,000 and staff recommended $5,000.
Organizer Karen told the board the event had been selected to host state championships this year and added a high school division. She said the registration form now collects stay and spending questions so future post-event reports will better capture condo and short-term-rental room nights as well as traditional hotel nights. “Any rental place that collects the occupancy tax is eligible for [room-night reporting],” a board member clarified during the meeting.
Staff noted the event’s historical room-night generation and recommended $5,000 for marketing. Board members discussed the applicant’s submitted marketing line items and whether mailers and other print items were required. The applicant said the full itemized list would total about $6,350 for the marketing items on the application; that figure prompted members to increase the award.
A motion to approve $5,000 for marketing was made, then replaced by a motion and second to approve $6,500 for marketing purposes; the motion carried.
Organizers said they will update future reports to include condos and Airbnb stays in their room-night counts and will charge a late-packet-pickup fee to reduce volunteer burden. Staff recommended the award be used for marketing only.
Ending: The board approved $6,500 to support marketing for the SPI Triathlon and asked organizers to refine room-night reporting in future post-event reports.
