The South Padre Island Convention & Visitors Bureau Advisory Board approved $4,000 in general marketing and $3,000 restricted to social-media promotion for the eighth annual SPI Wahoo Classic, a September offshore fishing tournament.
Organizers Dave and Diane sought $10,000 in marketing support and told the board the tournament averages about 45 boats and has drawn 119 unique boats since it began in 2016. “We average around 45 boats every year, give or take,” an organizer said, and emphasized the event’s local business impact as anglers and their families spend on food, fuel and retail during the weekend.
Staff recommended $8,000. During discussion board members said they wanted to target advertising to draw larger offshore boats and to use social media and video to demonstrate the tournament’s offshore fishing and the effect of newly placed fish-aggregating devices (FADs). “I think $2,000 will get you plenty of views to see how much of an impact that can do,” a staff member said when describing social-media targeting and geofencing.
Board member [name not specified] moved to approve the usual $4,000 and add $2,000 strictly for social media; the motion was later amended by the mover to allocate $3,000 to social media and then carried. The board asked organizers to return analytics showing impressions and engagement from the restricted social-media funds.
Organizers said they produce tournament buckets, shirts and other locally sourced promotional items and that costs (shirts, buckets, website fees) have risen. They also offered to collect video and drone footage for future marketing—“Our CFO is a drone photographer,” an organizer said—and supported staff suggestions to highlight FADs and larger boats in advertising.
The board recorded no roll-call vote count in the public transcript; the motion was described as carried.
The board’s action directs the marketing funds to be used as described and for the event organizers to report back with social-media analytics.
Ending: The Wahoo Classic representatives thanked the board; organizers said they will produce video content and keep records of marketing impact for future funding requests.
