Supervisors questioned and received clarification May 20 about a consent-calendar extension of the county’s contract with MissionSquare to administer deferred-compensation (457) retirement services for county employees.
Supervisor Lucas Villegas asked whether the extension represented convenience or a deliberate decision to seek the most effective vendor for employee retirement services. County staff and the county administrative officer said the extension adds approximately three years and that a multidisciplinary staff committee including HR, Financial Services and General Services is evaluating timing for a formal solicitation. Staff said an RFP process is likely to be developed in the coming year but that current procurement capacity is limited; an RFP development effort will be timed to permit outreach to staff beneficiaries and to assess satisfaction with services.
Supervisor Villegas said he wanted assurance that the county would not simply extend by convenience and that staff should pursue a timely RFP. County staff said they had already begun internal conversations about timing and would engage committee members to design the solicitation.
The contract extension was approved as part of the consent agenda (items 6–35).
