Roseville unveils “Level Up” summer reading challenge running June 2–Aug. 2
Summary
Library supervisors laid out the 2025 summer reading program theme, schedule, signature events and outreach plans supported by the Friends of the Roseville Public Library and other donors. The program includes a citywide kickoff, midsummer performers, a finale and a summer lunch outreach to Title I school sites.
Cambria Evans, library supervisor for programming and community engagement, and librarian Nathan Garcia presented the Roseville Public Library’s 2025 Summer Reading Challenge to the library board on May 19. The program runs June 2 through Aug. 2 under the theme “Read, Imagine, Explore — Level Up at Your Library.”
Evans said the library distributed 7,474 reading logs in summer 2024 and expects to expand participation this year. Signature events include an Arcade-style kickoff with Mayor Bobbi Bernasconi opening the event, two midsummer performances (NorCal Bats and Jordan the Science Wizard) and a neon “Bright Beats” finale with student musicians and a library DJ. The kickoff will feature carnival-style games, crafts, and prize drawings, Evans said.
Evans described 52 different styles of “brag tags” — small collectible tokens featuring youth book covers — as a new incentive to encourage repeated participation. “Brag tags foster a sense of accomplishment and encourage readers to continue on and set new goals,” she said.
The library also will run an adapted “summer lunch outreach” at eight Roseville City School District food-service sites to hand out take-home activity bags, books and program information to families attending summer meal programs. Evans said the Friends of the Roseville Public Library and a donation from Quality Technology Services are primary sponsors for the summer reading effort.
Program materials, schedules and prize information will be available on the library’s summer reading web page; brag tags and book vouchers may be picked up and drawing entries accepted through Saturday, Aug. 9 for those who complete the program by Aug. 2.
