Intern presents inventory of parks facilities, highlights repair and accessibility needs

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — Griffin Johnson, a parks department intern, presented a five‑minute project on May 19 that inventoried facilities across the park system and summarized feedback collected from staff and users.
Johnson said Country Hills Golf Course includes an 18‑hole course, banquet hall, pro shop, driving range and putting green and that respondents suggested updating the course layout, adding parking and repairing course divots. He listed Drakes Creek Park’s amenities — 13 baseball/softball fields, a greenway, a football field, 10½ full-size soccer fields, playgrounds, shelters, concession stands and restrooms — and said staff and users raised concerns about emergency access when park roads are blocked and about aging concession buildings.
The intern’s inventory covered Mallard Point (pier and boat ramp), Heritage Park (master‑plan work), Memorial Park (dog park, tennis courts, gazebos), Saunders Ferry (piers and an 18‑hole disc golf course) and Veterans Park (volleyball and pickleball facilities). Recurring feedback included requests for more parking, improvements to concessions and shelters, better accessibility on greenways and resurfacing or redesign of certain courts and fields.
Why it matters: The inventory consolidates user feedback and staff observations that parks staff can use when prioritizing repairs, ADA access improvements and future capital projects.
Board members thanked Johnson for the work; Parks Director Andy Gilley noted the presentation reflected staff conversations and that several items Johnson flagged — including dock expansions and a new maintenance shop — are already in active project planning.
The presentation did not include cost estimates or firm schedules for repairs; Johnson and staff identified the findings as input for upcoming design and maintenance planning.
