Board hears bids for turf repairs, athletic director add-on flagged as outside base budget

Cumberland County — At the work session, board members received updates on athletic projects and a proposed athletic director position as part of broader budget discussions.
Staff told the board they had two bids in hand for necessary football-field repairs and that some drainage repairs and interim fixes had already been completed. “We did vote when we sent the budget over. I made a motion to add the field into that and it failed,” a board member said while reviewing the packet; staff replied they had two bidders for the turf repairs.
Administrators said once bids are awarded they must clear County Finance for acceptance; legal questions arose earlier in the week on a separate capital bid and staff said County Finance counsel was reviewing that procurement. Staff warned that contractors’ schedules and the need to advertise some projects could make timing tight before the fall athletic season.
The packet also flagged an optional full-time athletic director position with an additional cost of roughly $110,000 if added. Staff confirmed the $110,000 was not included in the base proposed operating budget and would be an add-on the board would have to approve separately.
Board members asked for prompt follow-up because one high school’s first scheduled game is about 81 days away; staff said they would pursue county approvals and aim to update the board at the next meeting.
