Cumberland County school finance staff reported year-to-date revenues of $63,820,041.93 and expenditures of $57,220,002.37 through April, with fund balance remaining healthy but expected to decline as capital projects begin.
Staff warned that upcoming work — including a roof project at Brown (bid came in about $20,000 under estimate), fire alarm installations and electrical work at Martin — will take a “big hit” on expenditures in the next two months. The finance officer also reported sales tax receipts are below budget and said the office hopes the trend will reverse.
Board members discussed a district-owned property at Baker’s Crossroads. At a recent county commission meeting commissioners raised the prospect of selling unneeded district property to help plug a county budget shortfall; the transcript records the board discussing options such as trading the parcel to the county or severing the lot for sale. Board members asked staff to contact the Cumberland Development District to gauge local development trends before pursuing any sale to avoid “shooting ourselves in the foot.”
The transcript also records several small budget amendments and cleanups: a GEAR UP grant amendment, corrections to bonus-payment accounting, special education cleanup and a summer-school expenditure entry (state funds were noted). Staff said they would present bids for a football-field project at Stone Memorial but had not completed bid review at the time of the meeting.
