Public commenters urge action on springs, housing conditions and neighborhood flooding; local groups present apps and helplines

Public comment on June 10 saw several residents and community leaders raise local environmental and housing concerns and present community tools.

Post Springs and alleged land-clearing. Jim Conner, a local resident, urged the county to take stronger action over clearing and stormwater work near Post Springs Park and on properties he said lack permits. Conner described a large stormwater basin dug upriver from Post Springs and alleged clearing of rare hardwood hammock; he said an owner was operating a short-term rental with an anaerobic septic system without an operating permit and asked the county legal and compliance staff to pursue enforcement and penalties.

Sunrise Residence Inn and tenants’ concerns. Angela Spitz Garcia, who identified herself as disabled, spoke about continuing habitability and health problems tied to the Sunrise Residence Inn, which the county purchased earlier. She said she and other tenants have experienced degraded conditions, that management decisions had left some medical requests unheeded, and that she had been advised to seek legal assistance; county staff later told commissioners the county is already undertaking repairs and getting estimates for phased renovation while coordinating with the Alachua County Housing Authority as manager.

Southwest Twelfth Avenue flooding. Donna Blanchard and neighbors urged more action on recurring seasonal flooding in their neighborhood. Blanchard said she had been offered an out-of-date purchase price for a rental in the flood zone and that a developer’s schedule for demolition and a retention pond was unclear; she asked for an update on county engagement with property owners and for staff follow-up.

Local proposals and resources. Mark Van Sussbergen presented a concept for a $15,000 climate-dashboard mobile app based on a university capstone project (open-source template, student-built). He described a simple interface that could be populated and expanded and suggested it be considered as a complement to larger dashboard work.

Melissa Ray, executive director of the Nehemiah Project (a recovery community organization), described a newly opened, staffed recovery center at 4114 NW 13th Street and announced a 24-hour peer-monitored helpline, +1 (855) 352-7337, for residents seeking help with substance-use disorder resources.
