County plans consultant-led design for West End Park after large community workshop

Jason Mauer, director of Alachua County Parks and Open Space, told commissioners the June community charrette drew roughly 200 attendees and that staff used four workshop stations to gather detailed input on amenities and site layout. Attendees prioritized trails, an arboretum, playgrounds, pavilions, fitness equipment, a dog park, and retaining the cross-country course used for major events. Staff said they will develop a master plan so early-phase construction fits a long-term vision and will explore public‑private partnerships for amenities beyond the county’s budget.
Commissioners asked staff to consider golf-related amenities where feasible; Mauer said a driving-range-style facility would likely be accommodated in the flat area near the existing throwing fields and cross-country loop if a private operator were interested. Commissioners also flagged shading for playgrounds and proximity of parking to family-oriented facilities as important design considerations.
The board voted to authorize staff to move into consultant design and to return with a refined plan and proposed Phase 1 scope and funding.
Why this matters
West End Park is intended to provide recreation on the county’s west side and to support events that already use parts of the site. Moving into consultant design will produce construction-ready documents for an initial phase while preserving a phased master plan that can be funded and built over time.
