The Pensacola City Council on June 12 approved acceptance of three Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants to fund airport improvements at Pensacola International Airport.
Council approved acceptance of an FAA Airport Infrastructure Grant for Taxiway A7 and the A/A‑B intersection reconfiguration in the estimated amount of $1,459,435 with a $162,159 local match (total $1,621,594). The council also accepted an FAA Airport Infrastructure Grant for Runway 8‑26 rehabilitation construction in the estimated amount of $17,000,765 with a $1,973,890 local match (total $19,738,655). Separately, the council accepted an FAA Terminal Program Grant for terminal modernization and expansion in the amount of $4,000,000 and adopted a supplemental budget resolution to appropriate those funds.
Airport Executive Director Matt Coughlin told the council that the east‑west runway (Runway 8‑26) will be closed for approximately 300 days for the rehabilitation work; aircraft operations will use the north‑south runway (Runway 17‑35) for most flights during the closure. Council member Barrett asked whether the work would require a runway closure; Coughlin confirmed the extended closure period and said traffic would be routed to the alternate runway.
Mayor DC Reeves thanked airport staff and the team that pursued the grants while in Washington, D.C., and staff reported meetings with federal and state officials to secure continued program funding. All aviation grant acceptances and the related supplemental budget resolution (item 25-658 and 25-659/2025-33) passed on unanimous votes, 7–0.
Council members and staff said they would coordinate construction timing and community notifications about the runway closure and operational impacts.
The council’s acceptance of the grants authorizes the mayor to execute and administer the grants under the city charter and directs staff to proceed with project administration consistent with grant terms.
