Crestview council accepts $100,000 donation for animal shelter, approves lease for golf carts

The Crestview City Council on June 9 approved two measures for Crestview Unlimited: acceptance of a $100,000 donation to benefit the Crestview animal shelter and a 60-month lease for golf-course equipment.
City staff told the council the donation comes from the estate of Rita Chymiak and will be processed through Crestview Unlimited, the city’s nonprofit entity, with the funds designated for the animal shelter and a naming component honoring Rita Chymiak and Joan Sykes. A city staff member summarized the item as “an agreement to accept a $100,000 donation” and said the nonprofit would process the gift while the money would go to the shelter.
The donation measure passed on a motion to approve and allow the mayor to sign, carrying 4-0 with one absence.
The council also approved a lease with First Citizens Bank to finance equipment for Blackwater Country Club: 10 golf carts and one utility cart under a 60-month lease. Staff said monthly payments would be “just over $1,000” and that there is a one-time documentation fee due with the first payment; the lease includes an option at the end of the term to purchase the equipment at fair-market value.
Staff explained that Great Life Golf manages operations at the course and that payments will be made through the Great Life Golf/Crestview Unlimited partnership. The city will hold the assets in the Crestview Unlimited name; staff described the lease as a budgeted expense covered in the operational budget Great Life Golf manages for the course.
Council members asked several follow-up questions about course operations during the same portion of the meeting. Staff said the parking-lot repairs are out to bid and expected back in early July, while netting work is in an engineering phase because the nets are being raised and require new pole engineering. Staff also reported that Great Life Golf’s account manager, PJ, said the company will purchase new driving-range mats from its operating budget during the current fiscal year. Furniture replacement at the range was raised as a concern and staff said they would follow up with Great Life Golf about options and budgeting.
Both the lease and the donation measure were approved 4-0 with one absence.
