Commission Finalizes Pride Parade Tabling Plans, Orders Materials and Defers Pride Statement Vote

Commissioners said the commission will march in the Pride parade and staff or volunteers will staff a commission table. The commission’s tabling hours were set for roughly 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with cleanup beginning about 4:45 p.m.; parade lineup was estimated at about 10:30 a.m. Commissioners were told they are not expected to staff the full 4.5-hour table but to consider donating a half-hour or hour when possible to meet community members.
The commission ordered a tablecloth bearing the approved commission logo; staff said the tablecloth is expected before June 1. The commission also ordered 200 pamphlets, stickers with the commission logo and “LGBTQ know your rights” cards for distribution at the table.
Commissioner Alexander Gray prepared a Pride statement; one commissioner moved to approve it during the meeting but several members said they had not yet seen the full draft. The commission agreed to circulate the statement via a form or Google approval mechanism and to collect votes/edits by the following week so the statement could be released before the end of May.
The commission set an Outfest planning meeting for May 28 and said it will continue to schedule planning sessions at different times to accommodate members. Commissioners also discussed recurring community engagement opportunities including a monthly happy hour partnership with Trace Brewing and True Tea on the third Thursday of each month and possible participation in the Pittsburgh Hispanic Development Corporation’s Taco Festival in September.
Other unfinished-business items discussed included the commission’s unisex restroom recommendations — staff said they are coordinating calendars with PLI, the Department of Public Works and other offices to review zoning and permitting — and SOGI-focused training later in the year; staff said human resources and relevant departments are working on options for commissioner involvement and review of training materials.
No formal ordinance, grant or budget action was taken. The commission directed staff to circulate the Pride statement draft and to collect votes and edits electronically so the statement can be finalized before Pride events.
