Board approves first reading of new concussion-management policy following state guidance

The Wyndham Raymond School District board approved the first reading on June 4 to replace its concussion and head-injury policy with updated language aligned to Maine Department of Education guidance and national best practices.
Board members said the policy update responds directly to a Department of Education directive dated March 18, 2025, and follows model language developed from collaboration among DOE staff, the Maine Association of Nurses, the Maine Principals Association, the Maine Athletic Trainers Association and university athletic training program directors. District nurses, the athletic director and the district’s contracted athletic trainer participated in drafting a consolidated handbook that will present concussion resources, assessment forms and return-to-school protocols to families.
The board noted the replacement policy reflects current medical practice and DOE expectations; the policy committee recommended full replacement rather than incremental edits because the existing language was out of date. The board voted in favor of the first reading; the motion carried. The policy will return to the board with final language and the consolidated family handbook for a subsequent reading and approval.
