Surry County increases Social Services Board stipends; supervisor who serves on that board recuses
Summary
The Board of Supervisors approved higher monthly stipends for Surry County Social Services Board members: chair $150, vice chair $125, members $100 (up from $75). Supervisor Hardy recused after county counsel advised he should abstain because he receives a stipend for that board.
The Surry County Board of Supervisors voted to increase monthly stipends for members of the Surry County Social Services Board during its June 2025 meeting.
Under the approved resolution the monthly stipend will be $150 for the Social Services Board chair, $125 for the vice chair and $100 for other members. The change replaces the previous stipend of $75 (the county attorney and staff told the board that the last formally recorded change was in 2018 and that a later adjustment brought the stipend to the current $75 prior to this action).
County staff presented a letter from the Social Services Board requesting the increase and noted the stipend had not been adjusted in several years. During the meeting Supervisor Hardy asked whether he should participate in the vote because he serves as the board’s county representative. County Attorney Perkins advised, "In that case, sir, you should abstain for voting on this item." The supervisor subsequently recused himself from the vote.
With Hardy recused, board members moved the resolution and approved the stipend increases by voice vote. County staff indicated the increase was requested by the Social Services Board and that the change will be implemented following the board’s vote.
The board did not provide a detailed fiscal estimate in the meeting record; staff indicated the last formal resolution on stipends occurred in 2018 and that an interim change had set the stipend at $75. The action was recorded as carried by voice vote.
