At the June 10 meeting Council set aside time for community recognitions. Staff and council members highlighted recent retirements, community openings and water‑treatment awards.
Retirements and recognitions: Council acknowledged the retirements of Michael Pobloski (Parks and Recreation) and Cleta Jones (Communications). Councilmembers thanked both for multi‑decade service to the city.
Waterworks awards: City staff reported that Newport News Waterworks earned two gold awards from the Virginia Department of Health — Harwood’s Mill and Lee Hall water treatment plants both earned gold designations after meeting rigorous performance standards for filtration, clarification and backwash. Staff said the recognition reflects the system’s daily work to protect public health for the city’s customers.
Community openings: Council members and staff participated in a ribbon‑cutting for Legacy Landing in downtown Newport News and opened a new childcare center adjacent to that project. Councilmembers described the projects as increases in affordable housing supply and new childcare capacity for families.
Ending: Council members praised staff and community partners for project delivery and public‑safety and civic services; council also extended condolences for two recent community losses and extended congratulations to graduates across the city.
