The Town of North Berwick Select Board accepted the resignation of Police Officer Robert Welch and appointed reserve officer Jared Malatek to a full-time police officer position at its June 3 meeting.
Manager Dwayne Moreington told the board Officer Welch, who had served since 2017, submitted a resignation and plans to leave policing for private-sector work; his last day is listed as June 13. Moreington recommended appointing Jared Malatek, a reserve officer with the department for three years, to fill the vacancy. The board moved, seconded and approved the appointment 5-0.
Moreington explained that police officer appointments are presented to the board primarily for liability-insurance recognition and town awareness; other hires are typically handled administratively.
The manager said the department historically promotes from the reserve program and that Malatek’s appointment leaves the department with two reserve officers and a continuing search for additional reserves.
