The council on June 5 endorsed the Planning Commission’s recommendation to deny a proposed zoning-text amendment that would have allowed moving-truck and trailer rentals at a property near 47 East 800 South.
Staff and public-safety officials inspected the site with the applicant and found that locating rental trucks in the proposed area would impede emergency access and exhaust parking intended for the existing neighborhood retail use. Fire and police staff said they tested vehicle placement and could not accommodate both the trucks and required emergency access and parking stalls.
City staff also noted the property currently operates a neighborhood retail business that would require a Class 4 conditional-use permit and adequate parking; code-enforcement staff said the business was operating without finalized permitting and staff would follow up. Given the combined fire-access, parking and code-compliance concerns, the council voted to deny the zoning-text amendment, aligning with the commission’s recommendation.
The applicant indicated he was likely to withdraw the application; staff said code enforcement would continue to work with the property operator on conditional-use and parking compliance.
