PSC approves NextGrid solid‑state submeters for residential and commercial use

The Public Service Commission voted June 4 to approve two solid‑state electric meter models manufactured by NextGrid LLC for residential and commercial submetering in Maryland. Michael Spielman, on behalf of staff, said NextGrid submitted test documentation showing the Aurum Pro and IQ Pro models meet the applicable ANSI C12 electric meter standards and that the meters are already deployed in other jurisdictions.
Costa Pastalakis, NextGrid’s CEO, told commissioners the meters provide fine‑grain interval data (the company said it collects one‑minute meter reads and up to 100 data points) and additional software functionality designed to help utilities and meter owners monitor communications and performance. Spielman recommended approval and said staff would add the models to the PSC list of approved devices on the commission website.
The commission voted to approve NextGrid’s request; Commissioners Linton, Sussman and Barbet voted aye.
Why this matters: Approving new meter models expands the roster of equipment that utilities and submeters can use for billing and grid monitoring. NextGrid told the commission that its product and analytics can be deployed as part of broader submeter or smart‑grid services.
