City terminates San Pablo roundabout sculpture contract and issues new RFQ

The Palm Desert City Council on June 12 voted 5-0 to terminate contract C48070A with artist Kyle Absalom for the San Pablo Phase 2 roundabout sculpture and to release a new request for qualifications (RFQ) for a replacement public-art installation.
Economic development staff presented the Cultural Arts Committee’s recommendation and explained that the previously chosen concept, “Dueling Palms,” faced project-specific challenges that prevented timely completion. Staff said the new RFQ will solicit original proposals and incorporate community engagement during the selection process. Councilmembers asked staff to ensure community involvement given the public interest and to seek brand-new submissions rather than using existing loaned works.
Erica Powell, economic development staff, said the RFQ will be released immediately following the meeting and will include community outreach steps recommended by the Cultural Arts Committee. The council voted unanimously to terminate the current contract and move forward with the RFQ.
