Callie Ackland, a Springfield resident who moved to the city in February 2023, interviewed Tuesday before the Springfield City Council for a vacant Planning Commission seat and asked to be considered to help shape local growth.
Ackland told the council she is a U.S. Navy veteran with more than a decade of community-focused work and volunteer experience and is a graduate of the Sutton Leadership Institute. “I applied for the planning commission specifically because I want to take action and be part of shaping Springfield as it continues to grow,” Ackland said.
In response to council questions about development and infrastructure, Ackland said cost-sharing between developers and the public should be decided case by case. She said developers should help offset costs when projects strain existing systems such as water or sewer, but warned that requiring excessive developer contributions could stifle affordable housing and small-business projects.
Ackland described several priorities she would bring to the commission, including encouraging mixed-use development, filling vacant downtown commercial properties, streamlining approval processes and offering incentives to renovate empty storefronts. She suggested collaborating with local stakeholders including the Chamber of Commerce and a group referred to in the interview as CETA to help small businesses move from home-based or online operations into brick-and-mortar locations. She also cited roadway maintenance, naming Second Street between R and T streets as an example of local infrastructure concerns.
Council members who heard the interview expressed support for bringing Ackland forward for formal consideration. Mayor Sean Edward asked staff to place her on the agenda for the council’s next regular session so the council can make the official appointment to fill the remaining term on the Planning Commission.
No formal appointment or vote was taken at the interview session. The council completed the interview and adjourned; the appointment will be decided during the next regular meeting.
