Assigned counsel reports surge in family court cases; three-year grant expected to offset costs

Lloyd, representing the county’s assigned counsel office, told the committee that family court case assignments have increased sharply since voters approved a family court judge in November and the county now has three judges handling family matters.
Lloyd said the office is seeing a rapid rise in family court vouchers and assignments and that those additional cases are driving up costs. He said the office spends about 50% of its budget on these matters and that the caseload increase is “rapid” in pace.
Lloyd also reported that the county recently received notice that an application tied to Indusia Legal Services had been extended to a three-year grant period through Feb. 19, 2027, in excess of $3,000,000, and that the grant should offset administrative and caseload costs. Lloyd said the office received notice of the funding the week before the committee meeting.
